Roger Davies

Roger Davies is an artist/sculptor who works predominatily in metals. The work varies from garden sculptures of life size deer,rams and birds to watercolour paintings genrally of sea creatures such as turtles and fish.

He works to commision and has been involved in public art but also sells work at festivals exhibitions and garden centres. Roger has allways been involved in making things and has a natural instinct for painting and drawing. He trained as an engineer in his early years at Rolls Royce. He Left in the mid eighties to continue his painting and drawing in Cornwall, was accepted on the B.A. Applied arts course at the University of Derby  and achieved a first class hons degree in applied art.

 Current employment: – University of Derby Metals Technician required liaising between academic staff, students and outside contractors, contributing to technical problem solving in various processes. Teaches machining, welding, casting in semi-precious and precious metals, induct students and staff on equipment teach manual handling and health and safety. My current role requires me to work with engineering students and Art and Design students so I cross disciplines.

 

Personal interests enjoys water sport, swimming, canoeing, outside in the country side loves most types of music interest in art and design and has own practice. I run my own practice on a small scale making sculpture for various exhibitions and venues, I work mainly in mild steel but incorporate copper and cast items which I design and make.

 Education

 1993-1996university of Derby 1st class hons applied art.

1992-1993 Burton college of art and design Rolleston on Dove, gained diploma.

 1975-1978 Apprentice at Rolls Royce gained credit and distinction.

1973-1975 Ada Chadwick secondary modern, O level art, cse physics and integrated studies.

 Other Qualifications

NVQ1 tig welding, first aider, completed welding course at University of Sheffield (hallam)

Employment

2001-2012 University of Derby art design and technology and part time workshop lecturer.

2000-2001 Falmouth college of art and design technician in 3d design.

1999-2000 temporary technicians at University of Derby.

1996-1999 Self employed as a sculptor artist, working on public artworks, designing and making works for private commissions and working in collaboration with other public artists.

1992-1996 Full time student

1984-1992 Self-employed water colour artist in Cornwall

Painting scenes, promoting businesses printing works for public display’

Worked for a short time as a maintenance engineer for a food processing company in Truro.

1975-1983 full employment at Rolls Royce Derby, Engineer and fitter.

Duties included machining reading engineering drawings working to close tolerances, Engine Fitting and rigging instrumentation on experimental air craft engines.
